The climate in Europe after the new measures the Portuguese Parliament voted against is extremely heavy, but Mr. Papandreou considers that the Greek problem and the Greek efforts are separate to the general issues. He is expected to use this point in time to compare the Portuguese unwillingness to cooperate with the Greek willingness to apply the tough program. Sources from the Prime Minister’s office note that Europeans have one more reason to support Greece, since we decided to be punctual and very cooperative from the very start.
In the negotiations that Mr.Papandreou will have, he will try to secure a few better terms for the Greek debt, and his weapon is that the government is moving forward with the selling of public property, trying to find the 50 billion euros.
There are a few low points and these are the continuous decrease in growth and the lack of state income, which fail to show that the Greek economy will be overcoming this situation soon. That is why the PM’s statements in Stern were tinted with a warning. Mr. Papandreou has been in Brussels since day, and will be dining today at the workshop dinner of the European Socialist Party. He will also be meeting with the Prime minister of FYROM, Mr.Nikola Gruefski.
