Samaras is in favor of the farmers and the Eurobond

The economic governance of the EU, the funding opportunities of the country through the European funds, and also the common agricultural policy, are the focus of the meetings of the ND President, Antonis Samaras, with EU officials in Brussels.

After yesterday's meeting with the President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek, Samaras said: «The European Parliament now has a strong intervention on issues of economic crisis such as the -ahead it must give to decisions of the leaders on the economic governance of Europe».

He stressed the need for continuous and close contact with the European Parliament, from which Greece is expecting support for the structural funds, the common agricultural policy and the major trans-European infrastructure projects. «There are many battles that we have to fight here and win, especially now that Europe has to see how necessary Greece is for security in the region. We have not exploited this role as much as we should», he said, sharply criticizing the way the government is handling the crisis in the Arab world.

Particular emphasis was placed on his meetings to promote rural claims in an attempt to strengthen his party's relations with the rural world. He argued that «Europe's farmers should not join the European austerity», and is promoting a common front for the southern countries in view of the discussion on the common agricultural policy.

Today, Samaras will take part in the summit of the European People's Party on the crisis in the EU and the situation in the Arab world. ND considers that there is something similar happening to the fall of socialist regimes, and that the EU should intervene and help people. Also, the wave of immigration to the countries of southern Europe such as Greece should be addressed in a coordinated manner.

Regarding economic issues, Samaras is in favor of the Eurobond in order to boost growth in the countries that have increased problems. He wants to be present during the developments that will determine the future of the European Union, but also of our country, with the decisions that will be made to settle the debt. At the same time, he wants to improve the relations of his party with the other conservative parties of Europe and remove the mistrust which was caused by the initial denial of the memorandum. He is now considering that he has more arguments, as his primary estimate that the memorandum does not provide a solution, but leads to suffocation of the Greek economy, is confirmed.

The ND leader, however, wants to form a personal view of the trends taking shape in the European Union as to the handling of the economic crisis and the climate toward our country. This will prove to be useful in the confrontation of the expected communicative assault by the government and the drafting of his own updated economic proposal, which he will present at the end of March.
