Proto Thema and protothema.gr are the first Greek information media that went to the Kozloduy nuclear power plant, where there was extensive briefing about its current situation by the director Konstantin Dimitrov.

Dimitrov appeared reassuring, stressing that Kozloduy complies with all the conditions set by international conventions and guidelines.

The Kozloduy nuclear power plant opened in 1971. Today, only 2 of the 6 reactors are in operation (5 and 6), after pressure from the EU in order to advance the accession process of the country. Proto Thema went to the “brain” of the 5th reactor.

We should say here that in the previous days, Bulgarian Economy and Energy minister Traicho Traikov had said that the plans of his government for the utilisation of nuclear energy are in full effect. In fact, he spoke of the possibility that the new reactor, which will be supplied by the Russian Rosatom, might be placed once again at Kozloduy, and not in Belene as scheduled thus far.

The Council of Energy Ministers will have a special meeting in Brussels on Monday  to reconsider their plans for nuclear energy in Europe at a time which is internationally classified as a "nuclear renaissance", but also crucially branded by the tragic events in Japan.

The topics for discussion at the meeting are the effects of the nuclear accident in Japan on civil nuclear security in Europe, and the impact of the crisis in North Africa on the prices of energy resources.

As the director of the Kozloduy nuclear power plant stresses, all safety standards are followed, both by the staff and the residents of the surrounding area, with special radioactivity counters which have been installed in the station and within a 10km radius around it.

Greece will be represented by the Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change, Tina Birbili. The minister, speaking to protothema.gr, clearly states that "we must redefine the policy of European states on the nuclear issue, after assessing all the data obtained from the Japanese problem. It is clear that if a country as organized as Japan is facing enormous problems from a biblical catastrophe, other countries less familiar with the use of nuclear energy, such as those in the region of the SE Mediterranean, could face serious problems even under milder circumstances."
