The seasonal flu wave is slowly but steadily declining, leaving a decreasing number of victims in its wake. It is characteristic that one death per day has been recorded during the last week as compared to five last month. And for 3 consecutive days there has been no need for an ICU admission of patients with complications.

According to data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO), the disease activity has declined significantly, as in March only two in ten samples taken and tested by the Centre's services were positive for the A(H1N1) influenza virus.

More victims this year

In total, from the first fatal case of influenza on January 18 until noon of Thursday March 17, 155 people have died due to complications experienced after falling ill with the flu. This sad list includes four children, three of whom had serious health problems that made them vulnerable to infection with the pandemic strain A(H1N1).

The number of people that died this year because of the influenza has exceeded that of last year (144), while KEELPNO experts estimate that by the end of this year's alert, the dramatic account will rise to even higher levels. It should be noted that during July 2009 – March 2010, 799 people were treated in hospitals, 291 of whom were admitted in ICUs, in contrast to the 358 of this year.

The last recorded number (yesterday) in terms of ICU patients, is 62, while a month ago it exceeded 135 per day. Most of them are suffering from severe underlying diseases and needed ICU admission because they had respiratory failure as a result of the influenza.

The alert will stop in April

KEELPNO experts estimate that the decline of the seasonal influenza will continue for at least another three weeks, during which they expect that the fatalities record will continue, but at the same there will be the low intensity which was observed last week. However, the most pessimistic say that the death toll would come closer to 180 if the decline continues at this rate.
