Around 50 mummies have been discovered including some of infant children in a huge ancient tomb in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, according to an announcement by Egyptian Antiquities Minister Mohamed Ibrahim on Monday.
Wooden sarcophagi and death masks were found near the remains that probably date back to the era of the New Kingdom. The New Kingdom is the period covering the the 18th , the 19th and the 20th Dynasties of Egypt from 1567 to 1056 BC.
Early examinations of the tomb, which has been subjected to theft several times since antiquity, reveal that it contains the remains of several princes and princesses.
The discovery was made by a archaeological mission of Basel University in collaboration with the Egyptian authorities.
