European Energy Commissioner suggests a turn towards the TAP
Based on the recent Ukrainian crisis
The need to reduce energy dependency of the European Union to Russia and turning to other sources of gas supply was stated by European Commissioner for Energy, Günther Oettinger.
He stated that amongst alternative sources, are Norway, Algeria, Azerbaijan and the Southern Gas Corridor (TAP).
"Gazprom and Russia are partners of the European Union and this cooperation must and will continue. We began our cooperation in the 1960s, during the Cold War, receiving gas and paying for it, but there is a need to differentiate. We must have a partnership with Russia, but we must also reduce our dependency", he stated.
"It is necessary to avoid dependency and ensure our own production from conventional or non-conventional sources", he concluded.
