Erdogan sends his condolences to the grandchildren of Armenians
It is the first time that the genocide has been openly talked about by the Turkish government
The condolences of Turkey to "the grandchildren of the Armenians killed in 1915" during the massacres aimed at that community by the Ottoman Empire, were presented by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In his statement, the Turkish PM, for the first time, talked about the tragedy so openly. It occurred between 1915 and 1917, during the last years of the Ottoman Empire and was recognized as a genocide by many countries. Turkey does not officially recognize the Armenian genocide.
"It is our human duty to understand and sympathize with the desire of Armenians to commemorate the sufferings of those times", he refers in his text. "We hope that the Armenians who lost their lives in the early 20th century rest in peace and we express our condolences to their grandchildren", the statement added.
