85,000 contracted permanent staff about to be laid off
Described on article No43 of the bill - Public employees at immediate risk of losing their job
A bill passed by the Administrative Reform ministry in the Greek parliament provides for the layoff of at least 85,000 public employees.
As protothema.gr already wrote yesterday, Article No43 states that “relations between labour and officials, which were converted into those of indefinite duration will be terminated automatically regardless of the time elapsed after the conversion, if it is established in accordance with paragraph 2 hereof, that at the time of conversion the conditions prescribed in the case of conversion were not satisfied or the legal processes were not meet, and their positions will be eliminated.”
The issue was raised today in the parliamentary committee by SYRIZA member Alexis Mitropoulos, who said that “with Article No43 you go back at least 14 years. You should have set a more reasonable overview. 85,000 contracted staff were hired with the laws of Vasso Papandreou, Dimitris Reppas and Prokopios Pavlopoulos.”
It should be noted that Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said that Pavlopoulos’ setting concerns 35,000 employees.
The explanatory report of the bill says that "the relevant audits reached alarming findings regarding how the way each legislation for the transformation of labor relations to those of indefinite duration was implemented. Consequently, the essential review of all cases is a self-evident obligation of the Greek State in order to eliminate chronic inequities among employees."
According to the bill, ASEP will be the responsible body to review the contracts and set up teams consisting of ASEP staff, public institutions inspectors and civil servants with proven auditory experience.
