German Finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble believes Europe will emerge stronger from this crisis, and advocates the direct election of the president of the European Commission.
"Europe has better days ahead," he said in an interview in Saarbrucker Zeitung, adding that Europe and the euro have considerably stabilized their positions as of late.
"I believe that in a few years, looking back, we will see that this crisis was the starting point for strengthening Europe," he added, citing in particular the need for greater legitimacy of the EU institutions.
"An important first step would be to elect the president of the European Commission directly by the peoples of Europe," he says.
