The meeting of Prime minister Antonis Samaras and ministers Christos Staikouras and Yannis Stournaras with the troika representatives ended with mutual concessions.
The Greek premier set the red lines clarifying that the government will not implement new measures, as the Greek economy and society cannot bear them. After the cancellation of yesterday's meeting between troika and Finance minister Stournaras the representatives of Greece’s lenders appeared more conciliatory.
"There is significant progress in everything," Stournaras said, while it was announced that he will have another meeting with the troikans later today.
One of the main topics of the meeting was the transfer plan in the public sector that caused a mini governmental crisis Friday evening. That's why immediately after the meeting, the Samaras had a telephone conversation with Democratic Left president Fotis Kouvelis. The government agrees to proceed with the dismissal of perjury public employees by June and those removed to be replaced with an equal number to be recruited through ASEP. While there is political agreement in this issue, the problem is the time schedule doe not pan out due to the slow pace of the public sector.
The second major issue was the National Bank and Eurobank merger and their recapitalization, with the Greek government insisting that it should continue uninterrupted and unchanged despite the delay in collection of amounts required from the private shareholders.
The two sides also discussed the adjustment doses for amounts owed to pension funds and tax offices and how to bridge the financial gap of 2.7 billion euros for 2013-14. The new measures are currently being rejected since they would not pass from a parliamentary voting. The question is whether the issue will return in the next audit in June or if it will be transferred at the end of the year when there will be the overall picture of the Greek economy’s course.
