Felony prosecution for ELSTAT chairman for "inflating" Greek state deficit

The criminal prosecutions concern the offenses of false certification against the state, while it is requested that the president of ELSTAT face additional prosecution for the offense of repeated misconduct.
Peponis, who investigated the case, asks that the relevant case file be forwarded to an investigator of law 4022 on corruption and investigate if there are instigators or any involvement of other persons in these acts, or whether there are any other offenses.
According to Georganta’s accusations, the 2009 deficit was fictitiously inflated to open the way for the signing of the first memorandum and the imposition of the harsh austerity measures.

Papandreou’s reaction
Late on Tuesday night, after the ELSTAT prosecution became known, former premier George Papandreou issued a written statement which reads as follows:
"Eurostat published the Greek data for the Excessive Deficit Procedure on three consecutive occasions, from November 2010 onwards, without reservations, reflecting the significant improvement of the Greek fiscal statistics and compliance with the rules of ESL95.

In the past there were significant problems with the disclosure of the Greek EDP. These problems led Eurostat, in many cases, to publish the Greek fiscal data with reservations.
Today, the economic prosecutors brought charges against the leadership of ELSTAT, who tried to comply with the rules and restore transparency and credibility in a crucial field for Greece and the Greeks.
So today, this effort becomes a criminal procedure, while those who created the problem and drove the country to a financial precipice with their acts and omissions until October 2009 remain untouchable.
It seems the economic prosecutors "see" a problem only when a case can be associated with the PASOK government and its great effort to rescue the country.
