Only 250 of 24,600 declared hidden incomes

Only 250 of the 24,600 depositors who dispatched money abroad and are being audited for transferring black money submitted a supplementary statement to the tax authorities in order to voluntarily declare additional funds they "forgot" to demonstrate during the previous years.

3,500 taxpayers who have received this notice got in touch with the tax authorities to request clarifications and instructions to complete a new income statement through the specific application of the General Secretariat for Information Systems (GSIS), in order to pay the extra tax.

After the expiration of the period stipulated in the letter, January 31, the GSIS will crosscheck if some of the payers did not receive it. For those that did but have not responded it is preparing new letters, which will show the differences between savings and incomes, and they will be asked to pay 45% tax on these differences as non-declared income.

The initial list included 54,000 persons who sent remittances totaling 22 billion euros over the three years of the great crisis (2009 - 2011). Of these, 24,600 are under investigation, as they show “problematic” property statements, having been unable to justify the deposits they have moved abroad.

These remittances amount to 7 billion euros and if these taxpayers are not able to justify them in time, the tax authorities will impose taxes and fines or a freeze on their bank deposits. Based on current legislation, they will receive taxes at a rate of 45% (depending on the tax year of each income) along with the provided fines and penalties for late payment.
