Draconian measures and traffic arrangements for Polytechneio

This year's celebration of the 39th anniversary of Polytechneio will also occur under draconian security measures. The events started on Thursday with wreaths at the site of the Institute in Patission Street.

 

The faculties of central Athens have been closed since Wednesday evening and will remain closed until the end of the march on Saturday night, after the completion of the anniversary events.

 

Like every year, students, teachers and employees will remain on campus grounds for stewardship purposes.

 

Traffic regulations are already in effect at the University on Patission Street, while the academic community is on alert in order to guard the events throughout the anniversary.

 

The organizers are considering organizing new and different memorial celebrations within the Polytechneio grounds, besides the standard exhibitions and speeches. The celebration of Polytechneio will take place on Friday in the majority of schools, which have also organized events marking the importance and meaning of the anniversary.

 

 

 

Extra traffic regulations have already been in force since Thursday and will last until Saturday. On the day of the anniversary they will be progressively extended to the wider downtown area bounded by Alexandras, Patission, Stadiou, Vasilisis Sofias and their surrounding streets. Traffic arrangements will be implemented gradually, depending on the current circumstances.

 

By decision of the Athens Urban Transport Organisation (OASA), there will be modifications to routes and stops of buses and trolleybuses.

 

The Directorate of Traffic Police in Attica has planned and will implement measures to ease traffic in the area of central Athens. Up to Saturday, drivers should avoid moving and parking in the areas of the events, the route of the march, around the U.S. embassy and in the area around the center of the city
