Murderous attack on an Iraqi national in downtown Athens

police investigation is underway to locate and arrest the unknown perpetrators who attacked and injured a young Iraq national at 17 Anaxagoras Street in downtown Athens at 4:37 on Sunday morning.

The injured man bore multiple blunt injuries and was taken to Evangelismos, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 1 pm.

According to the evidence, the perpetrators are 5 people on 4 motorcycles and just before fatally injuring the Iraqi, in the same area, they had attempted to attack 2 more foreign nationals, from Romania and Morocco respectively, who managed to escape.

Public Order and Citizen Protection minister Nikolaos Dendias expressed his deepest sympathy concerning the death of the Iraqi national.

"Let me express my sorrow to the relatives of the Iraqi who was fatally injured by unknown assailants. I declare to everyone that the State will be ruthless to all perpetrators of criminal acts, whatever their pretext might be. I have already asked the leadership of the Greek Police to accelerate the process of locating the perpetrators of the murderous attack, in order to bring them to justice as soon as possible."

In response to the murder of the young Iraqi at the center of Athens, KKE attacked the government. According to its press office announcement, "along with the pogroms organized by the government, Xenios Zeus is applied by the fascist gangs that beat and stab the victims of war, slavery and exploitation. The young Iraqi who was brutally murdered in the city center in a cowardly manner is just one of their victims." KKE is also asking people not to tolerate the brutal violence against immigrants, saying that "those who seek to exercise it are hiding the causes of immigration and exploit the problem to promote their reactionary plans. Their aim is to crush the rights of the working class and the people."
