PASOK wants a long-term government

The background moves for the establishment of a government are currently peaking. Given the attitude of SYRIZA and the urgent need for the country to have a government, only accident can stop the relevant processes. Venizelos has invited the top executives to decide for the participation of PASOK. The chairman of the party wants their participation to be as smooth as possible, based on the election percentage of PASOK and the disapproval it suffered.

That was why he wanted the participation of SYRIZA. Venizelos never thought Tsipras could leave the safety of the opposition. But he wants the citizens to understand this, too. This is why he wants the decision to set up a government to be made in a meeting of leaders under the president of the Republic.

Another PASOK goal is to maintain the next government for a long time. Officially they are referring to a government of 4 years, but it is certain that the agreement will keep the parties tied at least until the elections of 2014 for two reasons: To allow sufficient time for the attempt to exit the memorandum to be fruitful, and to draw the new dividing lines between the forces of responsibility and the forces of populism (according to the PASOK perspective of course).

PASOK believes that the new government will be formed by Monday evening or Tuesday morning the latest.

After the agreement for the formation of the government, Venizelos will convene the PASOK PG. There he will announce his decisions on the party: financial control will be given to an international firm, the organizational and ideological issues will be discussed at the conference and the final decisions will be made at a syntactic conference in the fall. PASOK will begin a dialogue with other forces to reconstruct the center-left. Given the dramatic economic situation - bank debts alone exceed 130 million euros - it is possible that PASOK might fall apart simply because it could go bankrupt.
