Tsipras congratulated Samaras on his victory

Alexis Tsipras called Antonis Samaras shortly after 21:30, and congratulated him on his victory, adding that a government must be formed soon.

SYRIZA members characterized the debate involving their party in an ND and PASOK government as a joke, in response to statements by PASOK members who said it is essential.

"Politically funny debate without any basis," said SYRIZA spokesman Panos Skourletis.

On behalf of PASOK, Anna Diamantopoulou said that her party will not participate in an ND government if SYRIZA is not in it.

"If we want the country to have a strong bargaining voice everyone would want a strong opposition, which will benefit the country and democracy," said the SYRIZA spokesman.

Skourletis also said that based on the results so far, there is a positive picture of reversals, as a new political map is being drawn with the axis of political life moving to the Left.

Shortly after the elections and speaking live from Athens on the German television network «ZDF», Theodoros Paraskevopoulos, an economist and Tsipars associate reiterated SYRIZA’s position against participation in an ND government. "Democracy provides for an opposition," he said.

"Obviously some people have yet to recognize the gravity of the situation and are continuing their partisan tactics," said German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, invited by the studio of the show to comment on this stance.

But asked whether SYRIZA intends to organize strikes, Paraskevopoulos said this will not happen and that the strikes are organized by trade unions. "SYRIZA supports workers' requests on a political level," he said.
