Easter traveller traffic moves at a normal pace

The second great wave of the Easter excursion is in progress, which is expected to peak today, on Good Friday. Specifically, traffic around Athens is normal at this time, with queues at tolls in Afidnes and Eleusis.

In Zevgolatio, cars have at their disposal only two lanes with the auxiliary ones, while waiting at the tolls exceeds half an hour, making the journey from Athens to Patras or Kalamata an hour longer.

Meanwhile, Traffic Police are on alert to facilitate and ensure the movement of holidaymakers departing from urban centers.

“El Venizelos” international airport and the train stations are quite busy as well, while most of the bus routes are running normally after the suspension of strikes.

With the PNO strike ending, ships began normally departing fromports.

Ship occupancy reaches 100% and given the increased traffic, it is recommended that those wishing to travel should arrive in port some time before their scheduled departure.

According to traffic data this year, on Holy Thursday 154200 vehicles left against 175000 last  year.

According to the coast guard, yesterday 22 ships from departed Piraeus carrying 29508 passengers and 3708 private vehicles.

On Holy Thursday traffic was heavy in both ports and national roads. At times there were traffic jams on the Patras-Corinth highway and the new National roads of Athens-Lamia and Athens-Corinth.

There is ncreased traffic between Antirio-Ioannina and Athens- Thessaloniki at the Malgara tolls.

Greek police are taking increased measures for the safe movement of vehicles and citizens and to prevent accidents along all roads in the country. Measures will last throughout the holiday season.

In particular, the measures include:

- Increased policing of roads every 20-30 km, based on the particular circumstances of each area.

- A stronger police presence and patrol sections along the road network where traffic accidents occur frequently.

- Directing traffic with pedestrian traffic wardens at main intersections to avoid traffic problems.

- Increased traffic measures at the entrances - exits of the large urban centers where there is heavy vehicle traffic.

- Increased traffic measures in areas where there is massive passenger traffic (airports, ports, stations, etc.)

- Traffic regulations and elevated measures in areas where there will be celebrations.

- Traffic police presence at toll stations of the country to facilitate traffic, information and advice to drivers and passengers.

- Informing citizens in case of traffic jams or other problems.

Road crews will carry out inspections (especially for establishing hazardous violations such as speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, improper overtaking, etc. as well as offenses liable to cause serious traffic accidents, such as mobile phone use while driving).
