ELSTAT files submitted to the House

A new “fire” has broken out in the political landscape of the country by the submission to the House of the Hellenic Statistical Authority case files, relating to the allegations about an artificial inflation of the revised 2009 deficit, by Deputy prosecutor of the Supreme Court Mr. Nicholas Pantelis

The coonveyance of the case files to the House had been asked for by the Public Prosecutor, Grigoris Peponis, as the investigation he had carried out... stumbled upon possible liability on the part of former Prime Minister George Papandreou, former Finance Minister Giorgos Papakonstantinou and other members of the economy team of the government in question.

The case was assigned to Mr. Pantelis by the Supreme Court prosecutor, Mr. Yiannis Tendes, in order for the former to study it and decide whether the files should be submitted to the House or whether some actions should precede, such as witnesses etc.

Eventually Mr. Pantelis, who is the official above Mr. Peponis, will forward these documents, without any criminal evaluation, as prescribed by the law on the liability of ministers.

Regarding non-political persons, Mr. Pantelis will ask Mr. Peponis to continue his investigation and meet with the chairman of ELSTAT Mr. Andreas Georgiou, who was also called forth as a suspect but did not make a statement, which he himself had requested in a report to Mr. Tendes.
