"The FCU has cleansed itself"

Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos mentioned the arrests of the extortion network in Thessaloniki at the House, stating that it is important that “the Financial Crime Unit has cleansed itself” and accused the “para-journalistic part of the Internet”, for reports linking him with one of the arrestees.

Specifically, Mr. Venizelos stated: “I am under the pressure of the wear and tear. I experienced the situation of the financial prosecutors case first-hand. Even ND reached the point of stating that behind the pressures against the prosecutors, there is none other but me. Now I read in the para-journalistic part of the Internet that the arrest of the four organized criminal gangs by the Financial Crimes Unit of the Police has bothered Venizelos because one of them used to be in PASOK and might have been Venizelos’ voter”, and added: “None of which saved him”.

He noted meaningfully that “it is not pleasant that an arrestee is a candidate with LAOS, another is a journalist close to the conservative camp and the church, and another related to PASOK”
