Hopes for defusal of the garbage crisis

The official invitation sent by the Interior Minister, Haris Kastanidis, to the Executive Committee of POE OTA for a meeting tonight at 8pm, raises hopes of defusing the situation created with the trash in the streets of the capital and other cities.

The proposal was accepted by the unionists of the Federation of Workers in Local Government, according to reports.

Mr. Kastanidis stated: “I call on the staff of municipalities, especially cleaning staff, to return to their duties immediately, in order to return public spaces to smooth functionality, so that a serious risk to public health can be avoided”.

Earlier on, Deputy Interior Minister, Paris Koukoulopoulos called on workers in Local Government “to come and sit at the table in order to find a solution to their problems”, leaving the possibility open  for a similar arrangement, as with reservists, for an extension of repayment time for those who have taken out loans.

According to calculations by the vice mayor of Athens, the accumulated garbage in the streets of Athens weighs more than 6000 tons, while the workers’ mobilization in POE-OTA in the form of an occupation is a thorn in the side of Justice.
