The most famous ancient theater in the country is threatening to become the site of a striking dispute of actors, who naturally found the most effective way to express their demands and become yet another scandal for the foreign media.
The beginning in the “ancient” dance of unrest which will keep Epidaurus closed was announced by the StateTheater of Northern Greece, which will witness its theatrical performances being canceled. It is really surprising, since the STNG was ready to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary celebrating its first performance, which took place also in an ancient theater. Now it decides to keep the stall lights off – namely the Thymeli.
A court order that the employees sent to the STNG basically confirms the cancellation of the “Dionysia” on Friday and Saturday, 9th and 10th of July, in Epidavros. However, the premiere in the Forest Theater in Thessaloniki is expected to take place as planned on the 15th of July.
As the State Theater announced, the shows are canceled “despite efforts by the Administration and Department of Theatre”, which insisted that the issue will be resolved by the ministry within the coming months.
Specifically, employees are reacting to the law which intends to grant Public Utility status, and are requesting its exemption. They are also asking for accrued backpay and allowances for away work, which are also slashed to a great extent under the new law for civil servants that follows the new Medium Term planning.

The same applies for the National Theater, which is slated to fjoin in the dance begun by the STNG. The National Theater is rumoured to symbolically occupy the ancient theater! The “Skinovates” performance is scheduled for July 15th, includes a huge cast and is directed by Stamatis Fasoulis.
