President of the New Democracy party, Antonis Samaras, asked for elections on Wednesday evening after talks with Prime Minister George Papandreou.

“Mr. Papandreou has made his choices and the people can judge for themselves. Tomorrow’s reshuffle only has to do with individuals and balances”, said Samaras in his statement.

“Unfortunately for the Greek people, government policy will remain the same. In the New Democracy party we continue with the struggle for political change. It is now clear that the only people who can provide us with a solution are the Greek people”, he added.

He also mentioned that he asked Mr. Papandreou to resign, which initially the PM accepted but then changed his mind.

“That historic opportunity was missed” said Mr. Samaras.
