As a result of the crack a minor tsunami wave was created at the nearby settlement of Saranti in Viotia. According to information, the final repair might take up to 3 months.
Although EYDAP administrators assure that they already have plans for the use of the two water reservoirs in order to supply Athens, the anxiety of a top government source about the water quality of Yliki, which is considered inferior to that of Mornos, has caused some speculation.
This speculation, currently of no big concern, is reinforced by the recent discoveries of companies that were collecting, handling and processing hazardous toxic waste in the region of Yliki. Penalties for serious environmental violations have been imposed on these companies since last December by the Environmental Inspectors, and the case file has been forwarded to the Prosecutor.
On its part, EYDAP seems reassuring and claims that all available purification mechanisms will be used to avoid any health issues.

“There won’t be a water supply problem”
«The technical services of EYDAP have set up the transfer of water from the Yliki and Marathon lakes to the processing plants (refineries) to ensure uninterrupted water supply to the urban area of the capital», says an official announcement of the Company. Meanwhile, and in private conversations, its executives say that «we will have both water sufficiency and quality».
Since yesterday afternoon technical experts and CEO Nikos Bardis have been trying to assess the extent of the damage to the Mornos canal, built in 1980 and of a total length of 200 kilometers, which has produced minor problems in the past.
According to estimations, probably due to the rainfall in the region, landslides have caused the damage on the part of the canal that carries water from the Mornos lake. The section of the canal, which is completely detached, stretches for about 30 meters, while extensive damage has been caused to another part of the channel, about 70 meters long.
The damage appears at a location with difficult access, which requires the execution of earthworks. Apart from the basements of houses in the area, damage has been done to the regional road, but that will be fixed soon as well.
