"Support in order for Greece to stand on its own two feet"

During his broadcast, Prime Minister George Papandreou requested support from the entire political world, as well as the Greek people, in order to “get Greece to stand on its own two feet and to avoid reliving such moments”.

“I briefed the political leaders about the fact that there should be a total, comprehensive solution. I asked everyone to take responsibility”, stated the Prime Minister immediately after the meetings he held with political leaders at the Maximou mansion.

“Many issues are open - the future support mechanism, the debt service requirements”, said Mr. Papandreou, adding that “in any case, stability requires a comprehensive solution, and we will concentrate on that”.

“The solution must be real and Europe cannot seem to be caught unawares by the markets or get dragged behind them”, he stated.

According to Mr. Papandreou, the main goal is for Greece to stand on its feet as quickly as possible.

“Our weapons will be the unprecedented efforts of the Greek people, our consistence and reliability and our belief that the Greek matter is a European matter, and vice versa”.

“We are fighting to achieve the best for our country. My belief is that we will succeed”, he proceeded to say.

The cabinet, chaired by the Prime Minister, will meet on Wednesday at 11am, preceded by the Government Council for Foreign and Defense Policy.

After completion of the Minister Cabinet meeting, the Prime Minister will depart for Brussels, where at 18:00pm, he will meet with European Council President, Herman Van Rompuy.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Papandreou will travel to Paris in order to meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy.
