He committed suicide inside the offices of PASOK

A police riot officer committed suicide at dawn on Sunday, inside the central offices of PASOK. The Hellenic Police Force seems to be in shock over what could have brought the suicide of the 27 year-old officer, who was on guard duty with his squad at the Ippokratous offices of the political party.

The young constable had been facing psychological problems, and as such his sidearm had been removed from his possession. His weapon was returned to him after he was examined by psychiatrists who signed off on his stable state of mind.

"The young officer had lately been experiencing psychological problems due to a serious family problem. Combined with the fact that the riot police work long consecutive hours (Keratea demonstrations, anti-riot measures around ministries, demonstrations, football matches etc) without a day off, these stressful conditions sometimes produce results such as these, especially if the person is sensitive...", an operative of the police force stated, adding: "We must consider all these factors in order to avoid such dreadful events".

The tragic incident took place around 03:30am on Sunday morning. The 27-year-old and his squad were on duty outside the PASOK offices. He suddenly requested from his superior officer to visit the toilet inside the building. Once inside, he drew his sidearm, put it against his head and shot himself.

Shortly after, colleagues of his, who had heard the shot and were alarmed by his not having returned, went inside and found him lying in a pool of his own blood. "The 27-year-old came from Fthiotida, had entered the service through the Panhellenic exams and had been serving for years in the riot police", a fellow officer of his states, underlining that "the ministry should pay close attention to such incidents".

According to repots, the 27- year-old had a serious psychological problem since his mother suffers from an incurable disease.
