Greek government proceeds with conscription of maritime workers

The Greek government has activated the measure of civil conscription of maritime workers in order to end the strike of the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation that has kept ships docked at ports since last Thursday.

The Greek government has activated the measure of civil conscription of maritime workers in order to end the strike of the Panhellenic Seamen’s Federation that has kept ships docked at ports since last Thursday.

The measure will be in effect from 6 am on Wednesday. "With the immediate restoration of coastal transport in mind, we declare the civil conscription of crews of routed ships," Shipping minister Kostis Mousouroulis said.

The government chose the measure of civil conscription in order to put an end to the strike that has created many problems in the communication between the islands and the distribution of products.

The decision was reached essentially after the board meeting of PNO that decided to proceed with a new 48-hour strike from Wednesday morning onwards.
