The government of Germany does not “comprehend” the decision of Greece to intervene officially for the victims of Distomo in the upcoming trial of Germany-Italy in the International Court of The Hague.
The German minister in a written statement mentions that he does not “comprehend the Greek government’s decision” and notes that Germany acknowledges her responsibility for the sufferings of the Greek people in WW2”. However, Germany insists on its stance and believes that the court will support its position that in the court of law of The Hague, Germany has the privilege of exterritoriality.
Mr. Westervelle noted that “in reference to all lawsuits against Germany we are expecting all the international laws to be recognized and implemented and for Germany to be protected. If that does not occur then that is threatening for the universal community of countries with legal insecurity”.
The German minister was informed of the decision of the Greek government by Minister Mr. Droutsas last night (12/01). Many diplomatic officials close to the Greek ministry mentioned that the decision for the issue of compensations for Nazi victims to be sorted in court was based on Germany’s initiative.
