George Papandreou has decided to exercise Greece’s right to include itself in the open case of Italy-Germany for the damages and compensation asked for by Italy due to the WW2 crimes of the German army.

Mr. Papandreou referred to the gravity of this issue and its symbolism, and stated that “in deciding this we had to examine obvious ethical, legal and political reasons but also important national issues and the overall interests of the country in a particularly sensitive period for our country”.

We highlighted that all the decisions made have one factor underlying them, which is the benefit of the country and “through this decision and act we simply pay our dues to all those that made sacrifices for our freedom and our country”.

In this way the government decided to support the citizens of Distomo, one of the villages which was absolutely annihilated (almost 80% of its population) by the German Army. The citizens have won in their claims for compensation, but they could not execute the court’s decision on German state property. That is why they were forced to take recourse to the high court of The Hague together with Italy, which has turned against Germany for all the damage suffered during WW2, since The Hague is the only court that solves differences between countries.
