A dark day for mankind, remembered
Twenty-eight years ago the biggest nuclear accident in human history took place.
The Chernobyl nuclear accident happened on April 26th 1986 in reactor No. 4 of the nuclear power planets of the namesake city of the Soviet Union, which today is in Ukrainian territory. The accident was on the highest rung of the International Nuclear Event Scal, severely disrupting the economic and social conditions of surrounding areas and having significant impacts on environment and health.
The accident caused the immediate deaths of two station workers. Within four months, 28 firefighters died of radiation and heat burns, while 19 extra deaths occured until 2004.
