South Korea: The captain was not at the helm of the ship
An officer was at the helm when the ship started sinking and not the captain, investigators said at a press conference. In fact they specifically said: “It is possible that the captain was not even on the bridge of the ship... However, a third officer was at the helm of the ferry”.

However, the South Korean authorities continue the rescue operation to find the 271 missing passengers, using also an underwater robot.

Divers, though, cannot enter the part of the sunk ship due to strong sea currents and low underwater visibility.

Theories about the cause of the wreck will be clarified only after the official statement of the captain.

The company that owns the ship has apologized to the families of the victims, but it has not officially taken responsibility.
