George Markopoulos “Poems 1968-2010”
George Markopoulos was born in Messina in 1951 and since 1965 he lives in Athens. He studied economics.
He has published seven collections of poetry, a collection of prose, two volumes of his writings for the work of other poets, two monographs (one for the theme of football in Greek poetry and one for the work of Tassos Livaditis).

In 1996 he was awarded the Cavafy Prize in Alexandria, Egypt and in 1999 the State Prize for Poetry for his collection “Do not cover the river” (Kedros, 1998). A selection of his work was also translated by Michel Volkovitch in French and published under the title “Ne recouvre pas la riviere (Desmos / Cahiers grecs, Paris, 2000).
In 2011 he was awarded the National Prize for Poetry for his collection “Hidden Hunter” and, in the same year he was honored with the Award of the Academy of Athens by the Foundation of Kostas and Eleni Ourani for his entire life's work.

“The publication at hand includes the collections “Do not cover the river” and “Hidden Hunter” exactly as they were originally printed, and a very strict selection of poems from my other collections, while several of my poems have undergone from simple to structural changes, as I believe that, since I began to write, I have been editing and completing the one and the same collection."
