The Greek national poet is honored by Google by referring users to his poem 'The Cretan'
Google welcomes today the Internet users with a sketch of a blonde girl at the home page of Google. Once you click one the image, Google refers users to the poem “Cretan” composed by our national poet Dionysios Solomos, who was born today, on April 8, 1798 .
Although he is the lyricist of our national anthem, Google chooses another poem of his, the “Cretan”" that is narrative and written in five parts. According to scholars of the poet, this poem was composed during the period 1833-1834 and is considered one of his masterpieces . The lyrics are paired with iambic verse of fifteen syllable.
Dionysios Solomos is considered to be one of the representatives of the Ionian School and apart from the Greek national anthem”Hymn to Libery” and the “Cretan” has composed many other masterpieces, such as “Free Besieged”.
