Tragedy in Mytilene: Boat sunk claiming 7 immigrants

A ship found two migrants at sea and the coast guard immediately launched an operation to find any survivors - Two people still missing

Tragedy in Mytilene: Boat sunk claiming 7 immigrants
The Hellenic Coast Guard collected the bodies of two more immigrants that were missing in the sea area of Mytilene northeast of Cape Crow.

The tragedy became known when the two immigrants that were rescued from a ship said they were in a boat that sank with 15 other people. This put the Coast Guard on high alert.

A large team of Coast Guard vessels, aided by a Super Puma helicopter started looking for immigrants and so far eight people have been rescued and transported to Mytilene for first aid and psychological support. Afterward they will testify for the circumstances in which the accident took place.

Unfortunately, however, they found and recovered the corpses of two immigrants. During the night the Coast Guard had recovered five more corpses from the boat. According to the authorities two more immigrants are missing and investigations are continuing unabated.

Greek Shipping Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis said this is a tragedy and told Mega TV that five of the dead were found in the hold of the boat.
