Eurostat: 28% unemployment in Greece in November
At 59% for young people under 25 years old
The unemployment situation in Greece remains dramatic. In November 2013 it reached a new record high, while in women and young people it consistently displays the highest rates throughout the EU.
According to Eurostat data, the overall unemployment in Greece reached 28% in November (1,382 million people) from 27.7% in October. This percentage is the highest in the EU, while the unemployment rate for men was 24.9%, in women 32.2% and in young people under 25 years of age it rose to 59% (173,000 people).
It is characteristic that the three eurozone countries which recorded the largest increase in unemployment in one year were Cyprus (from 14.4% to 16.8%), Greece (from 26.3% to 28%) and Croatia (from 17.4% to 18.8%).
The countries with the largest decline in unemployment were Latvia (from 14.3% to 11.5%), Portugal (from 17.6% to 15.3%) and Hungary (from 11.1% to 8.8%).
In the eurozone and according to the January 2014data, the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 12% since October 2013, just as it did in the EU at 10.8%.
In January, the EU had 26,231 million unemployed people, of which 19,175 were in the eurozone.

In the same month, the number of unemployed aged under 25 reached 5.556 million people in the EU, of which 3,539 million were in the Eurozone countries.
The highest rates of youth unemployment were recorded in Greece (59%) and Spain (55.3%) while the lowest in Germany (7.7%) and Austria (9.7%).
