Handelsblatt: Schäuble’s plan for Greece in Berlin drawers

Reducing Greece's debt for the German federal government was not an issue of discussion so far. Now, Finance Minister Schäuble confirms for the first that they examine this scenario too. Meanwhile the Left in the country warns for burdens on taxpayers.

 
The Die Linke deputy in the Bundestag Sahra Wagenknecht, criticized the German government in the debate on the new aid to Greece. “The federal government wants to revisit the issue of aid to Greece until the summer, probably after the European elections,” Wagenknecht told Handelsblatt Online.

According to the report, for the first time, Deputy Finance Minister Steffen Kampeter (CDU), confirmed the existence of an internal document of the ministry, which looks formally at the scenario of financing Greece and providing a debt haircut. Corresponding media reports had so far categorically ruled out such an eventuality.

According to Kampeter, this is a "working document" that was created by the Federal Ministry of Finance, which “was not even appropriate for announcing interim or partial results.”

Wagenknecht feels vindicated as the existence of such a document confirms the belief of the party that "the announcement of a third program for Greece by finance minister Wolfgang Schäuble is another gift of billions to the Greek upper class and the lenders of Greece. The federal government is supposedly fighting for reforms against the majority of the Greek population but refuses, like the EU Commission, to ask the Greek oligarchs to pay. The Commission and the federal government are advocates of the millionaires."
