Stournaras’ meeting with prosecutors for accelerating economic tax audits
Lagarde list and money transfers abroad on the agenda of the meeting
A meeting of the Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras with the economic prosecutors is scheduled for noon Friday at 14:30 in SDOE.
The purpose of the meeting is to coordinate the movements of the tax administration and the judiciaries in order to accelerate the audits of important cases that have not progressed as the approximately 2,000 persons included in the Lagarde list and the intersection of the origin of money that in recent years was transferred abroad with remittances.
The meeting takes place after the initiative of the economic prosecutor for a preliminary investigation for tax evasion and money laundering in connection with the Lagarde list. With a recent document, economic prosecutor Athanasiou calls officials to set up a team to perform a complete audit which should be carried out within a month.
Additionally, Athanasiou instructed the managers of large Tax Offices to check big cases of remittances sent abroad and selected offshore companies that SDOE does not have time to audit itself.
However, the officials that were burdened with these cases are afraid that this might block tax audits, because neither Tax Offices have a sufficient number of inspectors to carry out this task, along with the goals they committed to achieve against the General Secretariat of Revenue.
