Not justified by their tax returns - 600 doctors, lawyers, engineers have sent another 2 billion euros - Two known businessmen who smuggled over 40 million euros of “black” money will be summoned for explanations
Audits by the Greek tax services brought to light three members of New Democracy who sent remittances of 3.5 million euros in foreign banks during 2009-2012.
After the first 46 names that were identified in having sent through remittances in foreign banks undeclared money of 100 million euros, the Control Center for Taxpayers of Great Wealth (KEFOMEP) discovered 600 more taxpayers who have transferred large amounts without previously declaring them to their tax office. Last week KEFOMEP sent to the leadership of the Finance Ministry a list containing known Greek businessmen, doctors, lawyers, engineers and politicians, who have been found to have transferred over 2 billion euros in black money in foreign banks from 2009 to 2012. For the three members of the New Democracy it is reported that their remittances in foreign banks are not justified by the tax statements they have filed.
The audit also found that two well known Greek businessmen have deposits of more than 20 million euros each, which are not justified. Those 600 taxpayers will be summoned by the tax authorities in the coming days to justify where they found the money that the tax authorities consider as "black", as it has not been declared to the tax returns of the last 10 years.
If they cannot justify the undeclared amounts, then they will receive taxes and penalties provided by law. This includes the three ND members who sent undeclared money abroad, the amount of which is slightly more than 1 million euros per member. What is striking about this case is that many of the taxpayers who will be audited do not work, while some of them are civil servants. Of the 600 taxpayers, 200 are businessmen, Board members and shipowners, while some are included in the Lagarde list as well. 30 are employees and retirees, 20 do not work, 100 are doctors, 100 lawyers, 50 architects and engineers and 20 athletes.
