Merkel will seek to form a government with the Social Democrats
What will be Steinbrück’s consideration?
Following the results of the German elections, the establishment of a " Big Coalition", which will govern the country in the next four years now seems more likely, because the cooperation of Christian Democrats with the Social Democrats is the only scenario that gives strong majority to the next government.
This government formation has been tested twice in the history of postwar Germany. The first time was in 1966-1969 under the Christian Democrat Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger, when the coalition government of the CDU with the Liberals was eliminated. The second time brought the first Merkel government (2005-2009), after the defeat of the Social Democrat Gerhard Schröder.
Regarding the Chancellor, her dominance now cannot be denied by anyone after the 41.5% she collected.
The problem is that now Steinbrück is necessary for her, as she failed to ensure political self-reliance. With 25.7%, having avoided the ultimate crash and knowing it is necessary to form a stable government, SPD will set conditions and require considerations in order to say "yes" to a coalition.
Merkel said in a televised broadcast that she does not intend to form a minority government. She said she expects to negotiate with SPD and the Greens to form a new coalition government in Germany.
“Most probably the negotiations to form a coalition government will be held among us,” Merkel said to Peer Steinbrück and the candidate of the Greens Jürgen Trittin, who were also in the studio.
