Merkel triumphant in German elections
If she secures political self-reliance it will be the first time in the postwar history of Germany after Konrad Adenauer in the 1957 elections
The first is for Merkel's allies in an attempt to form a
government, and the second, which was the biggest surprise of the evening,
whether she will win the political battle with self-reliance in the Lower House
(Bundestag).
If this scenario is confirmed, it will be the first time in the postwar history of Germany after Konrad Adenauer and the elections of 1957.
Merkel spoke of "super result" in her first statements from the CDU headquarters in Berlin and promised to manage trust of the citizens so that the next four years will be years in which the success for Germany will continue.
However, she acknowledged that it is still early to talk about the official results and added that she will discuss her next moves with the leadership of her party tomorrow Monday.
"Tonight, however, we can celebrate," she said and thanked her allies from the CSU, her partners in the party and the government, but also her husband, whom she thanked publicly for his support.
Due to the few public appearances and his love for Wagner, Merkel’s husband is called by the German journalists as the "Phantom of the Opera."
Steinbrück: The ball is in Merkel’s court now
We did not get the result we hoped for, although we strengthened our forces, SPD Chancellor candidate Peer Steinbrück said, adding that “the ball is in Merkel’s court now. She must find a government partner. Our party does not intend to speculate.”
Steinbrück denied a possible collaboration with the far-left Die Linke party, even though they could earn a majority in the Lower House with the Greens.
Merkel declined to comment on any scenario for a coalition government.
