The murder of Pavlos Fissas by Neo-nazi party "Golden Dawn"

The political importance of the murder of the 34 year old rapper forced open Pandora’s box, shaking Greek society. All this, because the perpetrator of the crime is 45 year old Giorgos Roupakias, a person closely and in multiple cases connected with the Golden Dawn party. The heinous murder exposed the deadly consequences which arise when intolerance, fanaticism and societal polarization are cultivated in the nation, by the actions of the Golden Dawn party, which until now remained in obscurity and acted with impunity. Just a few hours after the murder in Aphiali, district attorney-ordered searches took place in Golden Dawn offices, while Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, in a televised address to the public, made the “Nazi descendants” aware that any tolerance against illegality is over. Demonstrations in honour of the memory of Pavlos Fissas, in some cases sparking violent clashes, compose the explosive setting within which the problem of whether the Golden Dawn party should remain legal arises, and which must be addressed by the constitutional parties. However, the disgust that the murder of Pavlos Fissas causes, forces Greek society to face its own responsibilities: This murder cannot in any way be the first of a series of crimes based on social or racial discrimination in Greece. It must be the last.
