Bank deposits in Greece and Cyprus decreased in June

Private deposits in Cypriot banks fell by 7.6% in June and stood at 37.6 billion euros, after their reduction them by about 2% in May, according to data from the European Central Bank.

In the other countries of Southern Europe, deposits remained relatively stable. They declined slightly to 0.6% in Greece and 0.1% in Italy and Portugal, while in Spain they rose by 1%.

The ECB figures are seasonally adjusted, differ slightly from the information announced by the national central banks of the Eurozone countries and do not include deposits from central governments and other banks.

Capital controls and limits on transfers by depositors from their accounts remain in force in Cyprus, but the Cypriot government is gradually easing these measures.
