Madrid: Tsipras seeks common southern European front against Troika

SYRIZA president Alexis Tsipras continues his contacts in Madrid spearheaded by the need for coordinated action against troika from all the countries in southern Europe, and will participate in a demonstration Saturday afternoon in the center of the Spanish capital.

 

From the Spanish parliament Tsipras called on the European left, unions and movements to rise up against Troika for a reversal of the policies of cuts, austerity and the destruction of the welfare state, fragmenting the societies of southern Europe. "We need radical politics and not aspirins," he stressed.

 

Discussions on the common front are being held these days in Madrid between United Left coordinator Cayo Lara and French president of the European Left Party Pierre Laurent.

 

Lara and Tsipras agreed on the need to create a common Left front in southern Europe to address the overall Troika policies. The aim of the two leaders is to strengthen the forces of the radical Left in the European Parliament to be held in May 2014. It is indicative that a few days ago Lara had met with the leader of the French Left Front Jean-Luc Mélenchon and had agreed to this strategy.

 

Today Friday, Tsipras will give a press conference at 11:30 am with Cayo Lara in the Spanish parliament, later will meet with social movements and former European Parliament President Jose Borrell, and at 7.30 pm will speak at an event of the Spanish Left.
