Surprise by the election of the new Pope
The announcement of the election of 77-year old Archbishop of Buenos Aires Jorge Mario Bergoglio to lead the Catholic Church came as a surprise for the whole Catholic world.

He is a Jesuit, his parents had Italian ancestry and immigrated to Argentina at a young age, where they married and had five children.

Bergoglio studied Chemical Engineering, but after his degree devoted himself entirely to his great love that was religion. He taught literature in schools however, while studying Theology, and became a priest in 1969.

Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop in Buenos Aires in 1992 and archbishop in 1997.

He is very popular in his country, and called the Argentineans to not ‘get used to poverty’ and to take to the streets to defend their families. Last September he criticized priests who refused to baptize children of unwed mothers, calling them ‘hypocrites that keep God's people away from salvation.’
