Grenades and guns discovered in Korydallos prison

Penitentiary employees found two live grenades and a pistol magazine with five bullets in a D-wing cell at Korydallos prison after their check at 10:30 am Saturday morning. The alarm was sounded immediately, and police and the prosecutor were alerted.

The incident has caused concern to the administration of prisons as no one can exclude the possibility of a plan for an organized escape attempt, while investigations on how the weapons got inside the prison building are already underway. Authorities are trying to find the target, in other words the plan which these weapons were kept for.

In any case, and especially after the organized escape attempt of long-term convict Panagiotis Vlastos from the Trikala facilities, prison administrations throughout the country have been placed on red alert status and checks are carried out continuously in the prisoner wings, in fear of new similar incidents and attempts.

These past few months the Ministry of Justice has been receiving information about security issues in prisons, and potential escapes from various institutions in the country.
