Metro workers threaten with lasting strike

Metro trains will remain docked due to today's 24-hour strike by workers from the start until the end of their shift. Workers are also examining the possibility of going on a lasting strike, reacting to their inclusion in the single payroll, which automatically eliminates the collective labour agreement, as they note.

Speaking to Skai, SELMA (the Metro Operation Workers Union) president Antonis Stamatopoulos said that employees have suffered reductions in earnings at 35 to 40%. "We proceeded to an occupation last week. We have exhausted all means of pressure. We work 24 hours a day, so why should we work nights and weekends?" he wondered. About the protests of Metro workers which cause discomfort to passengers, he said "they will suffer now but will thank us for a life time for banishing the government."

Because of the strike, traffic in the streets of Athens has been increased since early in the morning.
