Cold air masses arriving from Siberia are expected to decrease the temperature in Greece even further and put the whole country in a freezing grip until Wednesday.
 
Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day of this winter with chances of snowfall in Attica. It has already snowed in Parnitha and Penteli, while tomorrow’s weather prediction is for snow in the northern suburbs and even light snowfal in the center of Athens.
 
Wednesday weather: sleet in eastern Peloponnisos, the Cyclades and Crete, with snowfall on the mountains and the lowlands of eastern Magnisia, Chalkidiki, the Sporades, the eastern mainland and Evia. Storms are expected in the south and the Aegean, while western and northern Greece will have mild weather with slightly cloudy skies. Extreme frost is expected in the continental regions, locally total in the north.

Temperature: will reach 4C, but will not exceed 1C in the north.
Winds: northern-northeastern moderate to strong, turning to northwestern moderate at night.
 
Thessaloniki
Weather: extreme cold and frost during the morning and evening hours.
Temperature: will reach 3C.
Winds: northwestern moderate to strong.
 
Emergency measures for the homeless due to the cold
 
The municipality of Athens has taken emergency measures to protect the homeless from the cold, using three of its buildings as hosting sites. Thus, from Monday, January 7, 2013, and as long as the weather conditions require, the following places will operate on a 24-hour basis:
 
Cultural Center of the 4th District on Lenorman and Alexandreias Str.
Aghios Pavlos Friendship Club at Mamouri and Dimi Str. (tel: 210 8223946, 210 8223184)
Kipseli Friendship Club at Aghiou Meletiou and Xenagora Str. (tel. 210 8674900)
 
The 1960 hotline will operate throughout the day for information and assistance only for the municipality of Athens.
 
Street work teams from the Athens Reception & Solidarity Center in collaboration with voluntary organizations will inform the homeless about the hosting sites, distribute needed materials, medicines and hot beverages, and will arrange for hospitals transfers where needed.
