White night ahead

 

Wednesday is expected to be the coldest day of this winter with chances of snowfall in Attica. It has already snowed in Parnitha and Penteli, while tomorrow’s weather prediction is for snow in the northern suburbs and even light snowfal in the center of Athens.

 

Wednesday weather: sleet in eastern Peloponnisos, the Cyclades and Crete, with snowfall on the mountains and the lowlands of eastern Magnisia, Chalkidiki, the Sporades, the eastern mainland and Evia. Storms are expected in the south and the Aegean, while western and northern Greece will have mild weather with slightly cloudy skies. Extreme frost is expected in the continental regions, locally total in the north.

Temperature: -12 – 0C in western Macedonia, -7 – 3C in northern Greece, -6 – 4C in central Greece, -2 – 9C in western Greece, -3 – 6C in the rest of the continental regions, -2 – 4C in the northern and northeastern Aegean and 2 – 8C in the rest of the Aegean and Crete.

Winds: northern strong to stormy in the Aegean, northwestern stormy in the southeastern seas, and initially northeastern stormy in the Ionian, which will gradually turn to northwestern moderate.

 

Frost and extreme cold will prevail throughout the country, with the temperature in Karpenisi, Metsovo, Kozani, Florina, Kastoria and Tripoli even dropping to -10. Weather conditions are expected to improve on Friday.

 

Weather: sleet in the south and snowfall at intervals, with weather phenomena decreasing in the afternoon.

Temperature: will reach 4C, but will not exceed 1C in the north.

Winds: northern-northeastern moderate to strong, turning to northwestern moderate at night.

 

Weather: extreme cold and frost during the morning and evening hours.

Temperature: will reach 3C.

Winds: northwestern moderate to strong.

 

Emergency measures for the homeless due to the cold

 

The municipality of Athens has taken emergency measures to protect the homeless from the cold, using three of its buildings as hosting sites. Thus, from Monday, January 7, 2013, and as long as the weather conditions require, the following places will operate on a 24-hour basis:

Kipseli Friendship Club at Aghiou Meletiou and Xenagora Str. (tel. 210 8674900)

 

The 1960 hotline will operate throughout the day for information and assistance only for the municipality of Athens.

 

Street work teams from the Athens Reception & Solidarity Center in collaboration with voluntary organizations will inform the homeless about the hosting sites, distribute needed materials, medicines and hot beverages, and will arrange for hospitals transfers where needed.
