The extreme and brutal neoliberal policies in Greece are not the only way out of the crisis; there are alternatives, Alexis Tsipras said at the meeting of the SYRIZA-EKM delegation with the the leadership of PT, the ruling party in Brazil.
Tsipras said that one of the primary purposes of the visit to Brazil is to evaluate the experience of how the country managed, 10 years ago, to pull itself away from the brink of social crisis due to extreme liberal policies and lead to a coordinated and democratic exit from the crisis, with wealth redistribution, tackling extreme poverty and productive reconstruction.
PT (Labour Party) president Rui Falcão appeared categorically opposed to the austerity policies imposed on the countries in southern Europe. He expressed the wish that relations between the two countries and the two parties could be empowered and become able, through political solidarity, to help Greece. He was clear that cuts in wages and pensions and the dissolution of a country’s social fabric are not options under any circumstances.
The SYRIZA delegation met with international relations secretary of the General Confederation of Brazil's Workers and representatives of the largest landless movement as well.
Last night, Tsipras met with leaders of the Greek community who have been living and working in Brazil for years.
