Government backs off on the 45% tax

The Finance ministry immediately backed off from imposing a 26% tax on incomes of 18.000 euros and above, and 45% on just 26.000 and above per year. This seems to come directly from the prime minister, who urgently called deputy Finance minister Yorgos Mavraganis to his office this afternoon.

According to information, the Finance ministry will ultimately withdraw the counter proposal for imposing increased taxes on everyone as compensation for the losses that would have been incurred for the state coffers if it had not agreed to abolish the special tax-free limits for children.

So, as indicated, the plan for removal of the tax exemption for children remains, but the government is considering the possibility of increasing the tax refund to 1,950 euros for all, without reductions, while the total annual income increases. In this way it can partly balance the losses for those with incomes of up to at least 41,000 euros.

These plans will be examined by the bipartisan committee for taxes that meets at the Finance ministry on Wednesday, with the participation of representatives of the political parties that support the government.
