The center of Athens on Tuesday, the day of Merkel’s visit, will be in a tight grip of demonstrations. The German Chancellor is scheduled to arrive at 12 noon and reportedly a dinner will be given in her honor at the new Acropolis Museum.

Demonstrations begin today with the GSEE-ADEDY rally in Syntagma at 6 pm. The metro stations of Syntagma and Evangelismos will be closed from 3 pm. This is a precautionary measure ordered by the police in order to avoid any incidents. These stations will start operating normally after the demonstrations and a further order by the police.

On Tuesday

At 1 pm on Tuesday a rally will take place in Syntagma by GSEE-ADEDY against "the ongoing anti-worker, anti-social and recessionary government policies and the Troika." Also, there will be a pan-Attica work stoppage from 12 pm to 3 pm in all public services.

PAME will hold a protest rally against "the new barbaric measures and the blackmail by the EU, the government and the capital"  in Omonia at 1 pm on Tuesday.

POE-OTA announced its participation in the pan-Attica work stoppage tomorrow from 12 pm until the end of shift, and in the rally in Syntagma Square.

The Independent Greeks will hold a protest rally outside the German embassy at 6 pm.

SYRIZA invites people to send a firm and peaceful message in light of Merkel's visit.

With the slogan "blockade the measures", KKE secretary Aleka Papariga invites workers and people to large protests against Samaras’ government and Merkel's visit.

During the demonstrations the Metro stations in Evangelismos, Syntagma, Omonia and Panepistimio will be closed.

Protests and marches will take place this afternoon in the main streets of Thessaloniki on the occasion of the German Chancellor’s visit to Greece.

The primary unions will gather at 17.30 in Kamara, while the Labour Center of Thessaloniki, the Union of Thessaloniki Civil Service Organisations and SYRIZA are calling for a rally at the statue of Venizelos at 18.30.

Red alert due to the visit

Police measures include: more than 6,000 police officers (EKAM, riot police, snipers etc.), 300 port officers (with tens of navy seals), various speedboats and a helicopter.

Lieutenant General Nikolaos Papagiannopoulos will be at police headquarters and the ministry of Public Order, and will oversee the operational planning. "These measures will be strong, creating a safety net in the Athens airport, along the relevant routes, the accommodation venue and the sites to be visited," the internal memo from police headquarters to all services reads.
