In recent days SYRIZA has signaled an attack on all fronts in order not
to allow the government any room for maneuvers and to consolidate once
and for all the feeling that it is up to the task in the role of the
opposition, determined to continue even during the summer
The party leadership considers the Troika arrival in Athens and the demand for strict adherence to all commitments, despite the current government's expectation that auditors will turn a "blind eye" to the deviations inthis year's budget, as catalysts for the developments.
The governmental dead-end is now apparent for the party. Some of it senior officials believe that ultimately, despite the verbal assurances of the government partners, there will be urgent measures in 2012 and horizontal cuts, since there is little room for equivalent measures. "If there were equivalent measures they would have found them by March when they signed a second memorandum," they say. And they believe a third memorandum is being drafted, more burdensome than the first two.
SYRIZA’s intention is to go to a total break up with the government and the Troika, without any misrepresentation of its attitude. This is why Tsipras refused to meet with the Troika because, as he said, "there is no point in meeting and talking with them."
They are responding to every government move and on Wednesday evening directly attacked Antonis Samaras, about whom spokesman Panos Skourletis said that he is leading us back to the drachma. "What the government spokesman exorcizes and charges SYRIZA with seems to be the result of the policy followed by the memorandum coalition government. Samaras will soon become the prime minister of the drachma."
A first important hint of a possible exit from the euro by the implementation of this policy was given earlier by party president Alexis Tsipras, who stressed that "the absurdity of the memorandum leads us to default and outside the Eurozone. If that is what Merkel wants, she should tell us herself and not through Thomsen."
